We Stand Together With Black Lives Matter

Many in the United States are demanding systemic change after Minneapolis Police murdered George Floyd. We support the feelings that drive people to the streets to demand change. The Black community knows this pain all too well. Our criminal legal system, rooted in the lie of white supremacy, has brutalized and oppressed people of color throughout its history. The belief that we can change an unequal system unites us. We demand action.

At the Center for Integrity in Forensic Sciences (CIFS) we evaluate, draft, and support procedures that eradicate the racist approach institutionalized in our legal system. When we enhance the validity of forensic science evidence, we move the system towards an objective, less biased approach. The burdens of systemic biases and failures fall disproportionately on people of color, especially the Black community. Black citizens are more likely to be stopped, searched, and arrested without cause. They are more likely to be subject to faulty, inaccurate, and unreliable forensic science techniques like field drug testing. Being targeted by police and subject to unreliable investigative techniques means that Black citizens are more likely to be charged with crimes, wrongfully convicted, and jailed or imprisoned. Black victims of crime, their families, and communities are often ignored or mistreated by law enforcement.
